LexiCarta

About

LexiCarta shows what a word means by showing what it connects to.

Search for a word and you get a map: its senses, the broader and narrower ideas around it, the parts and wholes it belongs with, and the words related or opposite to it. Click any word on the map to open up its own connections, and keep going.

Languages

Each language is explored in its own words: a Spanish page shows only Spanish words, a French page only French ones. How much of each language is mapped depends on how complete its wordnet is, so coverage differs:

Where the data comes from

The shape of the map comes from Princeton WordNet 3.0, a lexical database of English built by linguists over many years. The other languages attach their own words to the same concepts, using wordnets from the Open Multilingual Wordnet project. Where a language's wordnet has no definition for a concept, we show the English definition translated automatically, and say so beside it. Every source and its licence is listed under Credits.

Free to use
